Be global, learn global language and act globally

Amanur Aman

Giving publication of a newspaper is a crucial struggle; the matter is more vital to continue the publication; while earning readers favour is tough than the duo. My little experience in this arena says it. The concern overpowers on all said for when the publication is in English. No doubt it may be a toilsome factor to catch the reader's attraction due to language. But we question "Is language the only 'factor' in this regard?" We think 'No' as well as should not. Let us say, by 2010, this world will be forced to unlearn what have been pretty good till 20th century. At the same time, people will have to learn things which will not be available in regional languages (mother tongue). The updated knowledge and wisdom will not be available in any language other than English. This is a caution to all the non-English speaking people across the world, a research reveals it. So whatever the 'factor', we must feel the situation when we have to go first to ride on the century. We are also concerned about our children, the nation builders in future going to schools-colleges-universities. We have to rescue them and build them up so that they can easily enter into challenge of the century. Nobody can deny that English is now a true Esperanto, the actual universal language. All important things in the world are in English. Those who grow up speaking English can be understood almost everywhere in the world among scholars and educated people. We urge you to practice the language which keeps you ahead for the years to come. Kushtia is one of the smallest towns in the country. But it is an important part of the country's traditions and in the history of our great Liberation War. Besides, handsome Bangla language newspapers are in here. Good numbers of readers are also with theses. Many of always felt an English newspaper from here. However, it is no doubt a challenge. We would like to take it. A number of people of different walks of life already have appreciated us. We thank them. We thank the readers, well wishers, agents and hawkers.

We have entered the new millennium at such a critical time when the whole human situation is fast deteriorating; the unscrupulous knaves are ruling the roost; and the society, politics, and culture are suffering at the hands of terrorism, fundamentalism, religious militancy, and fanaticism. Bangladesh, our dearly bought country, is not an exception. After a lapse of only four decades, it turns much away from its avowed goals. The true spirit of our Liberation War is vitiated by the horrid specters of the anti-Liberation forces; democracy and rule of law are trampled under military boots; the constitution is dissected by the unlawful rulers and opportunist politicians; and the road to secularism and democracy is throttled by appallingly increasing terrorism, and religious militancy. The country has ended up with the worst of all worlds. And during these long hours of darkness, the defeated forces of the Liberation War are clawing their nasty way back to another Pakistan or Afghanistan where people, everyday, are dying like flies by recurrent militant attacks. At such a critical moment, among a very few good things, I am hearing the footsteps of a newspaper emerging from the periphery of the country. I wish to believe that 'the Kushtia Times' is coming up with the winds of change in our small world of journalism. It will stick to its avowed mission, and help combat all the evil forces of the society as a strong voice of greater Kushtia, and of the nation as well. I welcome with enthusiasm the glorious birth of 'the Kushtia Times'. Long live Kushtia Times !

The Kushtia Times, an English Weekly from Kushtia town is now no more a fiction. The much awaited newspaper has seen the light of dawn. But, of course, sincere efforts and painstaking labour have gone into making this dream come true. My wholehearted congratulations and thanks go with the crew of spirited people specially the editor and the publisher, Amanur Aman who could venture to embark on this new enterprise of publishing an English newspaper from this region where many Bangla newspapers are already vying with one another to survive. Apparently it may seem insignificant to think of an English Newspaper from this region as the number of such dailies or weeklies is still very low in the national context. I think it is a timely decision taken with a view to helping a large mass specially students of this region learn English through reading the news and issues very much familiar to them. This is no more an age of seclusion and isolation. Vistas have to be opened for the masses to help them find out the right source so that they can build themselves up globally. This attempt, I can say for sure, will benefit the people of Kushtia as they will find their voices heard in a newspaper published in a global language. I have all my good wishes for The Kushtia Times with the expectation that it will truly uphold the spirit of freedom, unity and amity.

Messege on Inaugural Issue

I am pleased to learn that an English weekly "The Kushtia Times" is going to enter the arena of print media. Kushtia is unique in it's socio cultural heritage. I earnestly hope "The Kushtia Times" will also be playing a significant role in introducing our cultural riches to the English speaking readers both at home and abroad. Let me congratulate it's owner/editor Mr. Amanur Aman, already an established reporter of Daily star for his present dynamic initiative. I wish every success of his project, voicing those who remain otherwise unheard and uncared. Let "The Kushtia Times" emerge as a voice for truth and justice.

It gives me huge pleasure to know that a band of enterprising and enlightened individuals plan to bring out a new newspaper, The Kushtia Times. There is little question that such a move will go a long way in expanding Bangladesh's journalistic horizon through a dissemination of the issues and the priorities that the people of the country need to understand and deal with to their satisfaction. A particular cause for happiness where the publication of The Kushtia Times is concerned is that it is a sign that good, positive journalism is a calling we can all respond to all across the country. More importantly, the boldness with which The Kushtia Times means to make its mark, and that in the English language, is an attitude that does everyone proud. It remains my hope that The Kushtia Times will join the bandwagon of all men and women and media organisations which aim to project the cultural traditions and political history of this land of wonderful, struggling people. Those people are the millions who have never ceased to believe in themselves and in Bangladesh, despite all the tribulations they have gone through for ages. The Kushtia Times will, I am certain, take up their cause, with courage and in just measure, and promote it in line with the spirit of the War of Liberation we waged and won long ago. My prayers and my best wishes go to the editor, his colleagues and all who mean to read The Kushtia Times in the days to come. Let this newspaper be an opening of a new window to our perceptions of the world around us.

I also expect the newspaper will say against all communal forces and work as a progressive one in the society.

It is my pleasure to say something about the publication of an English newspaper from Kushtia town. It is one of the best ways to take the rural people to the globe. English is a global language now. At the same time, I would like to observe that it will be hard to maintain the publication as it will not reach to the mass people easily due to language. But I hope the newspaper will earn readers favour within short time. I also expect honesty, sincerity and responsibility in writing news. I welcome all involved in this publication.

Kushtia is renowned for educational achievements, not to mention its rich cultural heritage. At the same time, it has also shown a good sign of improvement in the field of journalism particularly in Bangla. Here the publication of an English newspaper is a wonder. I welcome this challenge undertaken by a bunch of spirited, promising and progressive youths from this region. The Kushtia Times, I think, will be able to meet the growing challenge of globalization which seeks to bring the remote to the limelight. I also think such a strong voice of this region must take all out efforts to uphold the spirit of our dear motherland and keep fighting against all the evil forces that are trying to curb the image of our hard-earned freedom. I wish all the success on its way ahead.

Newspapers have always been the strongest medium of spreading knowledge and enlightening the mass. An English newspaper makes the voices of a particular region heard globally. I think the people of Kushtia, particularly the young generation, will be benefited from reading an English Weekly published from their region. They will also find rooms to ventilate their thoughts and feelings in a global language. I hope The Kushtia Times will nurture the spirit of progressive thinking as well as dreams of the forces of liberation.

It is my pleasure to know that an English newspaper is going to be published from Kushtia. English is the global language. There is no denying the fact that this language is the only tool of communication with global people. An English newspaper can easily make this communication taking people of the remote closer to the world. Bringing out an English language newspaper is, no doubt, a different initiative. But I would like to say that it is, in fact, very tough to maintain quality. A quality newspaper is very necessary for the country. I am hopeful that "The Kushtia Times" that is being edited by veteran journalist Amanur Aman will maintain all its quality.

At first I would like to convey my very best welcome for initiating the publication of a newspaper in English. It is undoubtedly challenging, specially when the publication is from a district level. But such a publication is very necessary and this will help people learn the art of global language easily.
