People once again cry for capital punishment of Kazi Aref killers

Political activists and local people one again demanded early execution of the verdict in the case for killing Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Kazi Aref Ahmed, also an organiser of the Liberation War, and four other leaders of the party.
They made the demand at meetings marking 14th death anniversary of the killings on February 16.
On the occasion, JSD and its front organisations organised different programmes including of wore black badges, silent processions and discussions at Kalidaspur in Daulatpur upazila and Kushtia town.
Kazi Aref Smriti Sangsad, Lokman Hossain Foundation and Yakub Ali Trust also arranged programmes at Kalidashpur and Philipnagar in Daulatpur upazila and JSD office in Kushtia town.  An armed gang killed Kazi Aref, Kushtia district JSD president Lokman Hossain, general secretary Yakub Ali, local JSD leader Shamsher Ali Mondol and Israil Hossain at a rally in Kalidaspur village of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia on February 16, 1999.
On August 30, 2004, the then additional district and sessions judge Fazlur Rahman pronounced verdict sentencing 10 people to death and 12 others to life-term imprisonment for the killings.
The HC in 5 August, 2008 a High Court bench upheld the death sentences handed down to 10 accused and acquitted 11, out of 12 others, who were given life term imprisonment.
On August 8 in 2011, a Supreme Court bench upheld the death punishment of 10. The apex court passed the orders after hearing appeals filed by the government and the accused against the HC verdict.
The court acquitted Ilias Ali one of the accused to death due to his natural death in jail.
Among the convicts awarded the death penalty, four have been still absconding, and four are now languishing in Kushtia and Chuadanga jails.
The accused with death are in jail ——–Anwar Hossain, Jhantu, Habiur Rahman alias Habi, Sahir Uddin, while Mannan Mollah, Bashar, Rawsan and Baker have evading arrest.
Police September 8, 2012 arrested the only convict awarded with life term jail Rofat Seikh alias Rofa. He is now in Kushtia jail.
Sahara Banu, 70, wife of slain JSD leader Shomser Ali Mondol told that she is now frustrated due to not seeing the execution of the killers.
“Where I will go to ask why this verdict is not to execute,” she asked this correspondent at her home at Philipnagar village in Daulatpur upazila, 56, kilometers off the district town on Saturday morning.
The octogenarian widow urged the present government to take initiative in this regard.
The government should take immediate step to execute the verdict as the highest court cleared in final judgment.
“It must be executed for the sake of establishing rule of law, and we urged the government to take measures to execute the verdict in the case without further delay Golam Mohsin, president of JSD Kushtia district told.
