Four and half month’s deadlock at Islamic University ended

Shanaz Aman - January 21st, 2013

The teachers organisations in Islamic University (IU) at last withdrew their long four and a half months strike and declared to return to classes after their last demand of removal of the proctor and student advisor was met on Sunday.
With this a long four and a half months deadlock of the university ended.
Leaders of the teacher’s organisations including Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) told that they would go to class from Monday.
According to campus sources, Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar on Sunday removed IU proctor Dr. Zillur Rahman and student advisor Dr. Talukdar L Hakim from their posts and appointed Prof Dr. Jahangir Hossain Mioln as proctor and Prof Dr. Mahbubur Rahman as student advisor.
Earlier, VC held separate meeting with different teacher’s bodies. These are IUTA, Bangbandhu Parishad, Zia Parishad and Green Forum at his office.
Later the university authority made an official announcement of the new replacements.
“VC assured us that the Treasurer who is not removed by the government will not attend his work from Monday,” Prof Dr. Iqbal Hossain, generalsecretary of IUTA told.
After the progress, the teacher’s bodies declared withdrawal of their agitation they have been carrying out boycotting class.
Prof Ruhul KM Saleh, general secretary of IU unit Bangbandhu Parishad told that they are hopeful to return class from Monday.
Zia Parishad general secretary Prof Ruhul Amin Bhuyian told that teachers should go to class.
The university had been at a deadlock demanding removal of the former VC M Ala Uddin, Pro-VC M Kamal Uddin and Treasurer Sahajahn Ali for nearly last four and half months since September 8. The stalemate began just after following a huge controversy over appointment of 132 teachers and officials in the university on September 7.
IUTA launched the agitation alleging massive corruption and nepotism in the recruitment. They staged movement on September 8  demanding cancellation of the recruitment and removal of the trio from their posts. No class and examination had been held at the university since the period as the teachers declared no work without removing them.
Then, government relieved the VC M. Ala uddin on December 27 and Pro-VC M. Kamal Uddin January 1. Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar of Dhaka University was replaced as VC. None was given appointment in the post of Pro-VC and no decision was taken on relieving the Treasurer.
Then IUTA extended its agitation till the Treasurer was removed.
The teacher’s body met new VC on January 3 on the first day of his office and urged him to remove the proctor and student advisor terming them ‘corrupt’ and helping hand to do corruption of the former administration.
When contacted VC told that he is not authority to remove or replace Treasurer. It is up to government.
“But over the on going issue I informed the government high ups and hopeful that decision in this regard will be taken,” VC said adding that “I also requested the Treasurer to stay out of his office for the greater interest of the university.”
VC also hopeful of a peaceful environment of the university campus.
