Seven brick kilns fined in Kushtia

A mobile court of Department of Environment (DoE) on Thursday fined the owners of seven brick kilns Tk 15 lakh on charges of setting up the factories without legal permission and for occupying agricultural land and polluting environment in different areas of Daulatpur upazila in the district.
At the same time, the DoE also served notice to 10 brick kilns owners at the upazila to show their documents of running the industry.
Alamgir Kabir, Assistant Director of DoE who led the mobile court told that the brick kilns fined were situated near dwelling houses and highways. These were using illegal drum chimneys in violation of environment rules, posing serious threat to the croplands in the surrounding areas. They were also set up without obtaining any license from the DoE.
These also were disrupting environment of the area through collecting earth from elsewhere including government and crop lands.
The brick fields are AGB bricks, JBC bricks, PSB bricks, ANB bricks, MBC bricks, BBC bricks, NNB bricks.
The court started its activities in the noon and continued to till 5.30:pm.
The mobile court also asked the brick field authorities to remove all their structures within the next 10 days.
According to the Brick Burning (Control) Act, 1989, setting up of brick kilns in municipalities and residential areas and near fruit orchards or on cropland is prohibited.
