Garment makers urge BNP to call off shutdown

Times National Desk - March 18th, 2013

Garment and textile manufacturers yesterday again expressed grave concern about the present spate of protests and shutdowns as the country is set to witness another 48-hour strike from tomorrow.
Main opposition BNP has called the shutdown demanding release of its leaders and workers detained on March 11 following police raids on its party office.
Leaders of different platforms of apparel makers and exporters also urged the opposition to call off of the strikes for the sake of the country’s economy, which has already been reeling from different internal and external shocks.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association in a joint statement said shutdowns hold back economic growth, limit exports and discourage investment.
The exporters said the global economic crisis and energy and infrastructure shortages at home have already dealt a blow to their business. As the foreign buyers are now threatening to cancel orders for delayed shipment, exporters have to go for expensive air freights to meet the cut-off time, the trade bodies said.
The economy will not be able to offset the losses caused by such shutdowns, they said.
