Times national Desk - December 16th, 2012

Exchange of Notes (E/N) and Grant Aid Agreement (G/A) on the 2nd Japanese Grant Aid for ‘Poverty Reduction Efforts on Primary Education’ amounting to 500 million Japanese Yen (app. 6.1 million USD) were signed on December 12.
The E/N was signed by Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh and Mohammed of Finance (for E/N); and G/A was signed between Dr Takao Toda, Chief Representative, JICA Bangladesh, and Mohammed Shafiqul Azam, Additional Secretary of Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry Shafiqul Azam (for G/A)  respectively at ERD.
Following the first contribution of the same amount (500 million JPY) on March 2011, this grant assistance will exclusively finance the Third Primary Education Development Program (PEDP 3) together with other eight development partners.
Japan’s firm commitment to the primary education development for a decade, has been focusing on improving quality of primary education for all.
In addition to the financial contribution to PEDP 3, there have been tens of young Japanese volunteers closely working with instructors in Primary Teachers Training Institutes (PTIs) and teachers in primary schools for science & mathematics education.
JICA experts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MoPME), have developed guidelines for the teachers to improve teaching and learning in classrooms, which is called “Teaching Packages” in science and mathematics under the Second Primary Education Development Program (PEDP II), and now, Japan’s supports are expanded to curriculum and textbook revision, teacher education and development and others related to the quality of education under PEDP 3.
