PM accuses Khaleda of fanning Ramu violence

Times National Desk - November 12th, 2012

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday lambasted the opposition leader for her delayed visit to Ramu and accused her of fanning the mayhem from behind the scene.
“You are now blaming others after doing everything from behind,” said the premier. “But the government will not allow anyone to play games with the lives of people. The government and democracy will continue in the country.”
She was addressing a programme organised to mark the 40th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling party, at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. About BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s ongoing three-day visit to Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong, the premier said the opposition leader at last managed time to visit Ramu after completing her India and China visit.
The PM mentioned that the home minister, commerce minister and disaster management and relief minister rushed to Ramu and Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar and Patiya of Chittagong immediately after the attacks and stood by the affected people.
“We have distributed Tk 4 crore as compensation immediately after the incident,” she said.
The premier further said, “We posted army and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) personnel and allotted Tk 20 crore for rehabilitating the damaged pagodas and destroyed houses.”
Jubo League chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhur, in his speech, demanded the government to eradicate drug abuse from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Awami Jubo League also conferred honourary awards on eight persons for their enormous contribution to the country. The awardees are: Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan; Mount Everest conquerors Musa Ibrahim; Nishat Majumder and Wasfia Nazreen; scientist Dr Maksudul Alam and three others — Mohammad Nurul Amin Shojib, Mahmudul Hasan Shohag and Al Amin Kabir.
Former Awami Jubo League chairmen Amir Hossain Amu, Jahangir Kabir Nanok and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim also spoke on the occasion.
