Deadlock at Islamic University continued

No class and examination was held at Islamic University (IU) yesterday as teachers have decided to refrain from atteing work in second day over their previous demand of removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer.
The university reopened on Saturday after 28 days of vacation.
A stalemate situation has been prevailing at the university since September 8 since the Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) and other organisation including Bangabandhu Parishad, teachers organisation backed by ruling Awami League (AL), Zia Parishad, BNP supported teacher’s organisation and Green Forum, a Jamaat backed teachers front kept them out of taking any class or examinations to press home their demand.
Earlier on October 2, IUTA in a written statement declared the VC, Pro-VC and treasurer unwanted in the university campus. It put six points demand that includes immediate removal of the VC Professor Dr. M Alauddin, Pro-VC Professor Dr. Kamal uddin and Treasurer Professor Dr. Sahjajahan Ali, cancellation of all illegal recruitment, judicial inquiry on the recent recruitment process.
In an executive committee meeting held today (Saturday), IUTA decided to continue their movement of abstaining from taking any class and examination.
IUTA president Professor Yakub Ali in the chair, the meeting was addressed among others by its general secretary Professor Dr. ASM Toriqul Islam, Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman.
“Removal of VC, Pro-VC, and Treasurer is only solution of ongoing deadlock.” Professor Yakub told.
According to sources, the IU is experiencing the two months stalemate since September 8 after a university syndicate meeting held on September 7 appointed 132 teachers and other staff against 76 advertised positions, said campus sources.
The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling party IU unit and Banglabandhu Parishad reported massive irregularities in the recruitment process and demanded its cancellation and removal the VC, Pro-VC and Treasurer terming them as ‘corrupted’ and ‘failure’ to run the university.
On October 16, IU unit Bangabandhu Parishad met with AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif when he came to Kushtia and urged to take immediate step to solve the stalemate at the university, in which Hanif assured to take step.
On October 23, the UGC formed a 3-member probe body to investigate the allegations against present administration. Headed by UGC member Professor Dr. Mohabbat Khan, the other members are UGC member Abul Hasan and Deputy Secretary of UGC Ferdous Zaman.
When contacted IU unit Bangabandhu Parishad president Professor Dr. Abul Ahsan Choudhury told that government should take immediate step to save the 12, 000 students of the university.
When contacted, Pro-VC Dr. Kamal Uddin told that they are trying to solve the situation.
