Asia Foundation to observe V-day in feb 14

The Asia Foundation Bangladesh will observe V-Day in 14th February, 2013 at Scholarshome Mejor Tilla Campus auditorium by donating 3800 books to 38 local academic institutions of Sylhet district. The Asia Foundation is donating 3800 books to express unity with V-Day’s global activist movement in over 140 countries to end violence against women and girls and develop awareness through spreading knowledge among Bangladeshi girls and promoting girls’ education by donating educational materials. Scholars home has voluntarily offered their friendly support to make the “Book Donation” event successful.
The Honorable Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet will attend as the Chief Guest, Aziz Ahmed Salim, President, Sylhet Jila Press Club, Ahmed Noor President of Sylhet Press Club, Dr. Kabir Chowdhury, Chairman, Acamedic Council, Scholarshome, The Asia Foundation’s Bangladesh Country Representative Mr. Hasan Mazumdar will attend as special guest. Ms. Eeshita Azad, Head of Communication, The Asia Foundation and Books for Asia Coordinator Ms. Sukla Dey will attend the event along with representatives and students from recipient schools.
At the beginning of the program, Sukla Dey will welcome all the guests and event partners for their presence and gracious support to celebrate V-Day with The Asia Foundation. The honorable chief guest and special guests will speak about the recent situation and challenges of women in our society, and discuss the importance of promoting education in academic institutions and encouraged teachers to help their students to raising awareness to end the violence against women. Books are the bearer of knowledge; it can work as a bridge to reach to the end of violence against women.
The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative Mr. Hasan Mazumdar states, “The Asia Foundation Bangladesh supports issues regarding development of women and how education can accelerate the rising of women against all odds.” Brand-new books published by John Wiley & Sons, Pearson, Lynne Rienner, W.W. Norton & Company, and other American publishers will be donated on this event. The Asia Foundation is continuously supporting Bangladeshi women of all level through its book donation program, which has been running since 1954.
In FY 2012, Books for Asia donated approximately 10,635 books at 109 girls’ Madrassa, schools and colleges all over Bangladesh, benefitting nearly 1,18,975 students. Books for Asia donates more than 50,000 new books annually to approximately 500 academic institutions and public libraries in all of Bangladesh’s seven divisions.
Apart from Book donation, students from recipient schools will perform different cultural activities along with a short drama that talks about the barriers a girl face in the society.
The Asia Foundation Bangladesh unites with V-Day’s spirit of believing women should spend their lives creating and thriving rather than surviving or recovering from terrible atrocities by handing over books that make them knowledgeable and aware and ultimately help girls to rise above all adversity of their surroundings.
