AL cadres chopped traders for not paying extortion

A group of cadres belonging to ruling Awami League (AL) chopped two businessmen over not payment of demanding extortion to them in Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga district on Saturday night.
In protest of the incident, the businessmen in the upazila observed a half day strike closing their establishment in the upazila town on Sunday.
The contractors were identified as Rabiul Haq Robi, 56 and Mosarraf Hossain Mosha, 55 of Damurhuda in Chuadangan.
Of them Mosha was referred to Dhaka as his condition sustained to be serious. Police arrested three AL cadres after a case was filed in this connection. Quoting the case filed with Damurhuda police, Officer-in-charge of police station Ahsan Habib ppm told that a group AL activists led by Abu Taleb, Kamrul Islam Kanon and Zahidul demanded extortion Tk. 2 lakhs to Robi and Mosha several days ago. Robi, a fertilizer trader and Mosha, a raw goods seller at Damurhuda upazila bazar denied to pay the extortion.
The AL cadres angered over the denying and they warned the businessmen for ‘dire consequence’ at any time, OC said.
A group of 10/12 led by the three AL cadres stormed into the alongside business establishments of Robi and Mosha at Sonally Bank More at about 8.30:pm on Saturday and started to ransack it. They also chopped the businessmen when they tried to resist the AL cadres.
A team from Damurhuda police station rushed to the spot and rescued the businessmen and sent to Chuadanga sadar hospital.
Mosarraf Hossain Mosha was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Ali Asgor Tagor, a ruling party lawmaker of Chuadanga-2 visited to the area on the night. He also held a meeting with police there.
“I asked the police to arrest the criminals involved in the incident and to take stern action against them,” Tagor told this correspondent in the morning.

Police launched a drive on the night and arrested three AL cadres. The arrestees are israfil, Badar uddin and Ershad.
Beside, in protest of the incident traders in the upazila town called a half day strike at the upazila. In Sunday morning, the traders kept close their business establishment since the morning. They also took position on Chuadanga-Damurhuda road blocking it.
Later, upazila administration and police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The traders withdrew their road blocking after police assured to arrest the attackers.
The situation is now under control, OC Ahsan Habib told.
