Report submit time on Subhan extended till Feb 18

Times National Desk - January 8th, 2013

The ICT-1 on Sunday extended the final report submitting time against war crimes suspect Jamaat leader Maulana Abdus Subhan by February 18.
Subhan allegedly committed crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
International Crimes Triubnal-1 extended the date as Prosecutor Ziad Al-Malum told the tribunal that they will submit a progress report at 2:00pm (today) appealing for two more months for completing the investigation.
On November 11, 2012 the tribunal asked the prosecution to submit the probe or progress report on Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Subhan today (Sunday).
The two member tribunal led by Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim fixed the new date.
Subhan was brought to the tribunal and kept inside the tribunal prison cell during the case proceedings while no defence lawyer was present at the courtroom.
On September 20 last year, members of an intelligence agency arrested Subhan along with two companions at Bangabandhu Bridge toll plaza in Tangail in connection with a case of violence.
SUBHAN’S ROLE IN 1971
Subhan served the Jamaat-e-Islami as acting Ameer (chief) of its Pabna unit during the Liberation War.
He was vice-president of the Pabna unit of the Peace Committee, an organisation of Pakistani collaborators, accordingto the report on the findings of the People’s Inquiry Commission on the activities of the war criminals and the collaborators.
Field level investigations have revealed that Subhan organised the Al-Badr and Razakars; formed the Peace Committee and was involved in a number of criminal activities.
He was implicated in a special tribunal case for his alleged activities against the Liberation War and killing of freedom fighters, innocent people and assaulting and repressing women.
He was asked to appear before the sub-divisional magistrate’s court on February 29, 1972. But he fled to Pakistan with Ghulam Azam at that time. (Source: “Ekattorer Dalalera” by Shafiq Ahmed and Advocate Shafiqul Islam Shibly, Patahrtala Pabna)
