Now the teachers on mass hunger strike for removal of IU Treasurer

Staff Correspondent - January 8th, 2013

Now the Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) will observe three hour mass hunger strike demanding the removal of the Treasurer of the university Prof. Sahjahan Ali today.
The IUTA sources said it will enforce the programme as the authority concerned did not remove the treasurer what it has been demanding since September 8.
Meanwhile, two top bosses—–VC and Pro-VC of the university were relieved of their charges  in face of long three-month agitation by IUTA.
“Our demand was of removal of VC, Pro-VC and Treasurer due to their various misdeeds. But the government relieved only VC and Pro-VC,” Prof Yakub Ali, president of IUTA told on Sunday.
The teacher’s leader said they will observe three hours mass hunger strike in everyday and  continue till the Treasurer is removed.  Campus sources said in face of teacher’s movement, government relieved the VC M. Ala uddin on December 27 and Pro-VC M. Kamal Uddin January 1. Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar of Dhaka University was replaced as VC. None was appointed in the post of Pro-VC.
Government however, did not take any decision of relieving the Treasurer.
“Teachers leaders in IUTA  executive body meeting held on Thursday decided to continue the agitation till the Treasurer is removed,” ASM Tariqul Islam general secretary of IUTA told.
Beside, Bangbandhu Parishad IU unit general secretary alleged that the newly appointed VC is still surrounded by the officials involved in corruption in past VC and Pro-VC regime.
“We demand immediate replacing of the corrupt officials and forming a neutral administration in interest of smooth running of the university,” Prof Ruhul KM Saleh, general secretary of IU unit Bangabandhu Parishad told.
The university is facing long three months deadlock since September 8.
The stalemate began after a controversial appointment of 132 teachers and officials in the university on September 7. IUTA launched the agitation alleging massive corruption and nepotism in the recruitment. No class and examination has been holding at the university since the period as the teachers declared no work without removing the VC, Pro-VC and Treasurer.
Meanwhile, first year honours admission test for 2012-2013 slated on October 17 has been suspended.
When contacted, VC Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar told that he has got only a day to work in the university since his appointment on December 28.
“I have to get time to talk to the agitating teachers. The office will resume from on Monday and I must take step on various issue,” VC told.
VC said a meeting is scheduled to hold with the IUTA leaders on Monday 10.00: am.
According to IUTA it will start hunger strike from 10.30: am.
