Day long hartal observed in Gangni

A day long peaceful hartal was observed in Gangni upazila in Meherpur district on  Sunday.
Awami League (AL) Gangni upazila unit called the strike in protest of killing its one of the members Saidur Rahman Beltu also demanding removal of police super of the district.
Road communications between Meherpur and other parts of the country remain cut off due the hartal.
Saidur Rahman Beltu also joint secretary of Meherpur District Bus Owners’ Association was shot dead on Thursday night.
The pro-hartal activists were not allowing any vehicles to ply on the Kushtia-Meherpur and Meherpur-Chuadanga highways due to the strike since 6:00am that snapped the road communications of Meherpur with Dhaka and the rest of the country.
AL leaders and activists led by Mokbul Hossain, former lawmaker from Meherpur-2, and MA Khaleq, president of Gangni upazila AL were seen picketing at different points in the upazila in the morning. All shops and business establishments have been shut down and no class is held at schools and colleges.
The AL men have been demanding immediate arrest of the killers and also removal of Superintendent of Police in Meherpur Abdullal Hell Baki as he failed to ensure security of the leaders and activists.
When contacted SP told that three people including two maid servants of Beltu and another ‘suspected killer’ was arrested and being interrogated.
“We have unearthed clue into the murder and hope to book them within short time,” SP told this correspondent over phone.
Meanwhile, Beltu’s mother Sokhina Begum filed a murder case with Gangni Police Station Saturday night accusing an unnumbered unknown people, Officer-In-Charge of Gangni Police Station Mizanur Rahman said.
The AL announced a three-day programme including Sunday’s strike on Friday evening.
The road communication between Kushtia-Meherpur (via Gangni) highway stopped since Friday.
Unidentified criminals shoo dead joint secretary of Meherpur district Bus Owners Association also executive body member of Gangni upazila Awami League (AL) on Thursday night.
The dead was Sahiduzzaman Beltu, 40, son of late Harez Ali of Devipur in Gangni upazila in the district.
Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Gangni police station Mizanur Rahman told that a group of 7/8 criminals went to Saiduzzaman two-storey building near the Bamundi bazaar at about 9.15:pm.
Quoting Sahiduzzaman’s servant Bipllob, OC Mizanur told that the criminals called Sahiduzzaman from the road through mobile.
“Saidur knew the callers as he went out of home and took them to his bed room,” OC said.
Saiduzamman was living in first floor of the house with a son and wife. None of his family member was in the house during the incident.
At one stage of talking, one of the criminals opened fire on Sahiduzzaman  point blank.
Three bullets pierced his head and chest. Saiduzzaman died on the spot. The killers swiftly left the spot firing several blank shots.
After the incident, servant Biplob who was in first floor cried for help and people nearby rushed to the spot.
Law enforcement agencies including police and Rapid Action Battalion from Meherpur unit rushed to the spot and recovered evidences including seven live bullets, a sandal and Maflars suspected to be used by the killers.
