Major developments, achievements

Apart from disappointments generated by accidents, deaths, killings and corruptions, the country experienced a number of developments as well as achievements in the year of 2012.
Below are the highlights of developments:
Maritime victory
One of the major achievements of this year is the triumph in legal battle over maritime boundary with Myanmar.  Bangladesh won its maritime suit against Myanmar as per 151-page judgment of the international tribunal for laws of the sea (ITLOS) at Hamburg of Germany. Bangladesh demanded 1,07,000 square kilometers in the Bay of Bengal but the tribunal verdict awarded 1,11,000 square kilometers.
Visits and tours
Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, arrived here on December 21 on a two-day official visit.
Both the government of Bangladesh and Thailand signed MoUs (Memorandum of Understandings) on agricultural cooperation and foreign services during the visit.
On November 9, Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar arrived Dhaka on five-hour whirlwind tour to the country Friday afternoon.
On July 4, former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam arrived here on a two-day visit.
On May 5, Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee visited Dhaka.
During the meeting Pranab Mukherjee assured Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of implementing all pacts between two countries soon.
On May 5, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived here to a rousing reception on a two-day visit to Bangladesh.
Hillary Clinton also agreed to sign a partnership deal with US and Bangladesh in which all bilateral issues will be discussed. “Hillary put emphasis on peaceful resolution of any political crisis of the country,” said Dr Yunus after the meeting.
On December 8, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Robert O Blake arrived here on a 3-day official visit.
Conquering Everest
Two Bangladeshi women conquered the highest peak of the ranges of Mount Everest. Wasfia Nazreen touched the highest peak on May 26 while Nishat Majumder conquered the Everest as the first Bangladeshi woman on May 19.
RCC polls held in Dec 20
District Awami League Advisory Committee Member Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhontu was elected the first mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) in a landslide victory in the polls.
Banani Overpass
Banani overpass on Farmgate-Airport road in the capital was open for plying vehicles on December 27.
Tigers win ODI series against WI
Bangladesh won the five-match ODI (One Day International) series beating the West Indies by two wickets in the final match on December 8.
